I was just thinking about the future of these United States of America in light of the whipping the progressives here took the other day at the polls. I think you know my feeling about the polls they take that indicate that Barack Obama popularity is in the toilet among white people. Now, I’m not going to go into a harangue about the crises he’s faced and the successes he’s had dealing with them and the promises he’s kept and the ones he’s tried to keep, despite the roadblocks he’s encountered from the republicans and the tea party which represents the sentiments of the majority of white people over the age of 55.
These folks would rather continue to line the pockets of the ultra-rich and accept the crumbs thrown their way by the people they put in office to govern the country.
I watch a lot of news on TV and listen intently to the views of the conservatives (neo-con or not). While the callers commiserate in their condition, they figure all they can do is blame Obama.
The research out there says that, of all the wealth created in America from 2010 to 2012, 95% went into the pockets of the richest 1% of the population.
(According to the latest version of “Striking it Richer: The Evolution of Top Incomes in the United States,” by Emmanuel Saez, of the University of California, Berkeley, the income inequality gap has been expanding, rather than narrowing, as the 2007-2009 recession recedes. That trend has been unfolding for more than 30 years, with the highest earners only temporarily set back by the most recent downturn.
The findings, based in part on U.S. income-tax data and census figures, update Mr. Saez’s earlier work with Thomas Picketty, with initial income estimates for 2012. The research will be updated again in January 2014.
Among the highlights:
–All told, average inflation-adjusted income per family climbed 6% between 2009 and 2012, the first years of the economic recovery. During that period, the top 1% saw their incomes climb 31.4% — or, 95% of the total gain — while the bottom 99% saw growth of 0.4%.
–Last year, the richest 10% received more than half of all income — 50.5%, or the largest share since such record-keeping began in 1917. Here is how the top earners break down: Top 1%: incomes above $394,000 in 2012; Top 5%: incomes between $161,000 and $394,000; Top 10%: incomes between $114,000 and $161,000.)
I think the trend continues into 2014 and will do so for the next 50 years unless something changes. It is reported that the ultra-riche have over 2 trillion dollars stashed overseas and will never pay their fair share of taxes on those funds, thereby depriving the rest of us the minimum opportunity to pursue our vision of contentment and satisfaction.
We like to say to the world, that we are the best country in the world, the most powerful, the most innovative, the smartest leader the rest of the world should look to for forward thinking ideas and research, when we had to get rid of the NASA while the European consortium sends a rocket to land on a freaking comet, 354 million miles away!!! We were the ones who went to the moon, sent our people into space to explore when weall shared in the successes and contributed taxes so we could do such bold things! We are an afterthought now. We might want to think we are the “best” but you’d better pinch yourself and get real. We aren’t.
While the Europeans collectively have developed a train, TRAIN, that goes 600 miles an hour (and will finally go 1800 miles an hour!), and the Chinese are building the biggest dams, the longest bridges, the tallest buildings and by far, export more goods, and invest more money in the Third World.
While the rich conservatives will not contribute to fund our infrastructure, while the rich steal more from the populace, this nation falls behind the rest of the world on many levels.
Who outstrips us on education while we gloat over our sports prowess? Japan….with China, South Korea, Singapore, the Netherlands, and Spain not far behind us; need I go on? Yet the rich sit on their money and amass a fortune, selfishly! And the prejudiced white people send more ilk to Congress to choke off progress. The hatred has divided us, stifled progress and hurt the neediest among us. We stand where we stand…..I expect this country to continue to do what we have been doing….fail to be the best in the world, and to include the all of us in the prosperity we could have achieved.
We have had to pare our military to its lowest levels in 60 years. Are we the strongest and best equipped army? We are building less military aircraft since the Korean War, are we the leader anymore? After years of shipping good paying jobs overseas, we are slowing fighting back (under Obama’s administration) and slowing the trend. Who builds more ships? Japan, China and Korea, that’s who. Our cell phones are made in China, Korea and India… when is the last time you called some company for help with your electronics? I’m sure your responder was not here in the good ole USA! And for God’s sake, how do the Iraqis, the Chinese, Afghanis pay for all those cell phones????
While the new Congress screams that they will stop Obama from improving the Affordable Care Act and covering more people, they will stop him from recognizing people who been here almost all of their lives and are in essence, citizens, they will make him approve an oil pipeline we do not need and thereby pollute the land, they will limit his ability to reduce the onerous debt of our student population, they will not allow increased wages, equal pay for equal work, they will take away women’s right to choose their health care and create higher paying jobs and increase taxes on the rich.
The republicans conveniently forget that they are the architects of the depression (recession), two costly wars, a government shutdown costing 24 billion dollars, the national debt, let alone the loss of assets of millions of Americans via the mortgage debacle.
Now they want to present themselves as the saviors of our economy…… it’s much like the fireman who become an arsonist so he can be recognized as a hero….we shall see.
I say, if that’s what you want, it’s your life; I don’t want it that way. We just have to tread water until 2016. I just hope the liberals and progressives will not sit on our asses and accept the garbage that is sure to come. We are prepared to fight back right now.
Enough said, I’m out!!!
