More Thoughts on April 21, 2014

I’m getting back to serious politics today, after a time out to celebrate the Homegoing of my beloved niece, Wilma Holmes. She was the principal caregiver to my sister who is still with us after ninety seven years.

The most important political issue, as I see it, is getting liberals, progressive independents and Democrats out to vote this November. The midterm elections are as critical to the success of an open, honest, fair presidential administration and Congress that looks after the welfare of all the citizens of this nation. If you want to insure that all the people we send to Congress are determined to work together to resolve the problems facing many of our citizens, then you must vote.

I still say, do not accept the old axiom, “Don’t discuss religion or politics!” because we need all of our voters to understand the issues behind the laws that Congress proposes. We need to talk to voters and ask them to study the significance of the laws that benefit the nation. Do not let the tea party and right wing ads or mouthpieces be the only influence they hear. We have to be proactive! We have to, because no to will let the liars, the cheaters, the jerry-manderers and naysayers win.

Just think…. The average income or CEOs in America was a whopping $11.7 million in 2013 compare to about $15,000 for a low wage earner, hardly enough to survive on, yet take care of a family. paul ryan is delusional if he thinks taking $4.7 billion dollars out of federal programs that help the poor while allowing the average millionaire to get a $200 thousand tax break. These republicans, with no empathy with or sympathy for the middle class and the poor, spend time voting to repeal the ACA or investigating the IRS or failing to pass meaningful immigration reform. Just think, a path to citizenship and working in the open with a fair wage for 11 million people would extend the financial benefit pool for Social Security by fifty years and take that right, off the table for discussion by the right-wingers!

Let me close with a comment about the XL pipeline. President Obama, do not approve it! It’s clear it is the dirtiest oil imaginable and if it polluted those lands, it would stifle agriculture and meat production for decades. Further the projected jobs from the pipeline, according to the Congressional Budget Office and the OMB, would not materialize. That dirty oil will not help this nation achieve oil independence because that oil, after refining will go on the world market for sale to the highest bidder.       The only ones who will get rich are the koch brothers and other millionaires and billionaires who invest in oil tankers and speculation.

I’ll talk about Russia, Ukraine/ Putin and cliven bundy tomorrow. I’m out!
